Submissions

GLOOM CUPBOARD is an online litzine that seeks work of high artistic merit and purpose–poetry that stirs the senses, fiction that engages the finer faculties, and non-fiction that provokes discussion and debate. We welcome poetry, fiction, flash fiction, creative non-fiction (personal essays/memoir), reviews, and artwork.

Of special interest, we are also eager to hear from Eastern European authors/artists for our “New Xopowo” series. To be featured, please query with a short introduction of yourself and your work to: gloomcupboard@outlook.com

At this time, we will also consider guest articles and interviews, so if you want to talk about your local lit scene or profile a  writer, feel free to contact us. For general inquiries, complaints or compliments: gloomcupboard@outlook.com

All other work should be sent through our submission manager in the appropriate category below. Original, unpublished works only. While we read simultaneous submissions, please notify us if your piece is accepted elsewhere. Also, please wait to hear from us regarding a submission before sending more work. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis—although we reserve the right to ask authors to wait six months before resubmitting—and authors retain all rights to their work. Artwork and book reviews are published year-round, while poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction are published in our Fall (Sep/Oct), Winter (Jan/Feb), and Spring/Summer (May/Jun) issues.

Creative Nonfiction: Works of all lengths will be considered, but we prefer work of fewer than 2,000 words. We define creative nonfiction as memoir or personal essays. Non-English pieces will be considered if an English translation is provided with the submission. Please include a brief third-person bio with your submission. All general guidelines apply. Creative nonfiction is published in our Fall (Sep/Oct), Winter (Jan/Feb), and Spring/Summer (May/Jun) issues.

Poetry: Submit 1 to 5 poems at a time. It may be helpful to read some past issues to get a sense for the type of poetry that we publish. Non-English poetry will be considered if an English translation is provided with the submission. Please include a brief third-person bio with your submission. All general guidelines apply. Poetry is published in our Fall (Sep/Oct), Winter (Jan/Feb), and Spring/Summer (May/Jun) issues.

Fiction or Flash Fiction: Submit 1 story at a time. Indicate whether your piece is “fiction” or “flash fiction” and include a word count. Flash fiction should be 500 words or less, and fiction can be any length, but we prefer work of fewer than 2,500 words. Non-English stories will be considered if an English translation is provided with the submission. Genre fiction and erotica are unlikely to be accepted unless it has a “literary” bent. Please include a brief third-person bio with your submission. All general guidelines apply. Fiction and flash fiction are published in our Fall (Sep/Oct), Winter (Jan/Feb), and Spring/Summer (May/Jun) issues.

Book reviews: We are primarily looking for reviews of poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction books. Please include a brief query mentioning the genre and content of the book that you have reviewed. We are also interested in promoting the work of new authors, so if you have recently published a book, you can submit a PDF to us along with a brief query, and we will assign an in-house reviewer to consider writing a review for it. All general guidelines apply.

Artwork: We are always on the lookout for fresh art to feature on our Artists page. Please submit up to 3 pieces in JPG format along with a brief third-person bio, which can include links to your website/portfolio. All general guidelines apply.

  1. Thank you to everyone for commenting :)!

Carson, I have to disappoint you … we are a capable and experienced team of volunteers and have no income to support payment to the authors. Your work does receive 5000 views a month though …

    1. Writers need to gain reader awareness, so I believe 5,000 views a month could be worth more than money. Soon enough I will be submitting my own work here.
